Material Science & Molding
Metal injection molding technology mixes metal with polymer or organic binder under high temperature and the resulting mixture has fluidity similar to plastics. After the molded mixture is heated and pressurized via a molding machine, it is injected into molds to form. Then, using chemical or heat breakdown, the adhesive inside of the green part is released. After that, under a high temperature environment, the liquid phase sintering principle is used to greatly refine the green part into the final product. The required equipment includes kneader, injection molding machine, catalytic debinding furnace, and vacuum sintering furnace. The advantage of metal injection technology is that mass production is possible, in addition to high product complexity, good mechanical properties and reduction in production cost. Materials that can be used include SUS 316L, SUS 17-4 PH, SKD11, Fe-8Ni, Fe2Ni, and AlSl 1010 (magnetic), which can be used to make parts. The tonnage of metal injection equipment is 50~80 tons.

Metal injection molding(MIM) is suitable for mass production of small to medium size of high precision, complex, high performance mechanical components. Nowadays, MIM is widely used in mechine, electronics, automobiles, clock and watch, optoelectronics and biomedical industry etc.. For example, components of 3C products such as hinges, keys and vibration generators are usually made by MIM.
